It was my belief at the time of this painting that life was a series of obstacles and challenges. When you were young the challenges and obstacle were ostensibly, sharp and difficult. As time wore on life smoothed out – and though there were significant challenges ahead (big bump?) Life would, to some degree, smooth out. The older you got, I reasoned, the more you learned, and life became easier. It was a naive notion to be sure; one that a young man with hopefulness had. In the end it turns out that Life can continue to be a series of pointy pickets – broken marriages, career disasters, wars, misfortune, pandemic. Yet, there are still sunny days and rich colors to behold.
Painted in the late seventies in San Francisco. One day I came out of a meeting and left my painting and poetry book on top of my car and drove off. A few blocks away I realized what I had done and back-tracked hoping to find the book with this painting and poetry in the street. Alas it was not to be found. Lost forever. I sadly accepted the fact. However, ten years later I was contacted by a man in San Francisco who had found the book. He returned it to me intact. Ironically his name was “Dan”. He too was an artist and worked for a printing firm in SF. It was a miracle! One that I never forgot. Like the time I lost my income tax return check on the New York City subway only to have it returned to me in Brooklyn anonomously, by mail.
